- Zia (catching up to Chloe, who is still flustered): "Hey, you should probably apologize to that demon girl." *Serass walking away in the background.*
- Chloe (still walking): "Just — tell her I'm sorry for me." Zia: "Are you okay?"
- Chloe: "No — Zia — not in a long time." "I'm just — I feel like I'm starting to lose my mind." "It's been months and months, and there's no end of this in sight." "I need — I need my old life back." "I need there to not be portals in the goddamn sky." "I need to go back to being the boring girl from Ohio that nobody in California pays any attention to." "I don't know who or what I am anymore."
- Chloe: "I'm more horse than human, and I'm losing the old me."
- Zia (grinning): "So what you're saying is, we should stock up on hay and carrots."
- Chloe glares at Zia irritably.
- Chloe softens.
- Chloe: "And I suppose we should get you a bag of mice too?" Zia (holds up a finger sagely): "Mice are an important resource for every scientist!"
